CPI (Cultural Partnership Initiative) 2021 is an international cultural cooperative initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE), presenting series of training program addressed for professionals in creative industry and guided by collaborative mentorship of Paju Typography Institute (PaTI, South Korea) and M Bloc Academy (Indonesia).

Conveying the theme of “Empathic Design for Sustainable City”, ten creative professionals with diverse design backgrounds were challenged to address issues in urban context using empathic and sustainable approach. In nearly 3 months (November 2021-January 2022), this training has covered multidisciplinary topics such as architecture, urban design, graphic design, product design, fine arts & crafts, applied technology, culture & local heritage management, and public policy.

Participants then implemented their knowledge into critical issues in Indonesia such as vernacularity of cities, welfare of marginalized settlements, mental health of urban population, habitable urban, development of local artisan potential, and many more. This exhibition is showcasing outputs of this training with an intention of sharing conversation and to encourage empathic & sustainable design practice in the public realm.

Bresenham’s line algorithm is a line drawing algorithm that determines the points of an n-dimensional raster that should be selected in order to form a close approximation to a straight line between two points. A continuous line which is drawn by algorithm is a set of disconected pixels on the screen. If the resolution of the screen is low, the line is broken like a staircase, and as the resolution increases, the size of pixels decreases and the line is reproduced smoothly. The artist is interested in how an object changes according to resolution. On a flat plane with multiple resolutions, lines appear as points, lines, and planes in various shapes. The exhibition is composed of a meditational place to bring the free change of perspective of the digital environment to the material world and to see the objects existing in various forms behind the ultra-high resolution eye view.

data abstraction (2019)
CNC Drawing and screenprint on paper (screenprinted at Frans Masereel Centrum)

Research residence at Frans Maselle centrum in 2019. During the program, I worked on <Data Abstraction> with an interest in the expression of low-depth bitmap images. A bunch of leaves reflected in the sun with a continuous colour scale, but I say the colour is green. The word is not enough to refer to the scene as I saw. I feel frustrated to define the colour between leaf and leaves. Eventually, I cannot find a clear word, and the colour and shape entangled and remain as an abstract image.
